“The first Let’s Play initiative is a $15 million, three-year commitment to KaBOOM!, a national non-profit that’s saving play by ensuring there is a great place to play within walking distance of every child. Together, through Let’s Play, Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM! will build or fix up 2,000 playgrounds by the end of 2013, benefiting an estimated five million children. ”
What a day! I arrived at 8:30am to find 200 volunteers (from Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, Public Allies , Edison Park Elementary’s Principal, Carla Patrick, and Assistant Principal, Jennifer Escandell, and other local, non-profit groups) already registered to help build an entire playground from start-to-finish in 7 hours.
This Herculean effort was led by many people including KaBoom!’s project manager, Cassie Haslett and Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s David Lorenzo.
Despite pouring rain throughout the entire day, the dedicated team of volunteers completed a beautiful playground on time.
And during the day, we all enjoyed some great music by a local DJ….which encouraged a lot of spontaneous dancing as shown in this 14 second video clip:
