“Liam, I must be the Susan Lucci of Emmy nominations for filmmakers”
This is how Miami documentarian Joe Cardona greeted me two weeks ago at a fundraiser for his upcoming film. As an explanation, Joe has been nominated nine times before finally receiving the award for his documentary on Haiti’s earthquake, Nou Bouke. He recalled that evening in 2011 when he garnered not one but three Emmy nominations. “I didn’t receive the first award….then I didn’t get the second….and I thought….here we go again.”
Having directed 16 feature-length documentaries and directed, produced and written two feature films, Joe’s next documentary will focus on the Pets’ Trust drama occurring in Miami-Dade County. Learn more here.
So, it’s no surprise which words of inspiration Joe chose to pass on to the next person in the project, “You can” — it took Joe nine nominations, but he did it. And you can to, that’s his message.
Joe Cardona is the 16th person in #YouWowMe – the first-ever photography project to combine portraiture and personal words of inspiration which are passed to the next person — i.e. a “pay it forward” of inspirational photography.
