Candid portrait photography of the Harper Egginton family – Delray Beach, FL

Last Friday I was hired to take a family portrait at the client’s winter home just north of Delray Beach, FL.  This was a real treat for me because most families request a very traditional, posed portrait but the Eggintons, who were vacationing from Minnesota, specifically said they didn’t want any “posed” photos and asked me to just spend time with their family for the afternoon and evening and have full creative license to photograph what I saw.  This was a photographer’s dream come true.

Candid photography or candid portraiture is a somewhat older terminology.  More often now, people use the term photojournalistic photography or photojournalistic portraits and it is my favorite method of photographing people.  Of the 10 images I’m displaying here, my favorite photo is the first one of the brother and sister at the pool (their names are witheld due to their parents’ request).  I just love how they can spend time together doing the same activity and yet they are simultaneously independent.  My second favorite photo is of the brother running in the yard with his arms in the air.  His father was hosing him off after a day at the beach and the son was just loving it.  At the end of the evening, the family relaxed by the pool and enjoyed a beautiful full moon.  Obviously, those two images are a little blurry because I used a long shutter speed but I still appreciate them.

What’s your opinion?  Do you prefer traditional, posed portraits? Or candid, photojournalistic portraits?  Leave your comments here:

Pablo Cano’s Red Velvet Theater inaugural production: “The Kitch in Sax Blues”

Last night I had the fortune of being commissioned by Cuban marionette artist Pablo Cano to photograph the dress rehearsal of “The Kitch in Sax Blues”  and it was a theater evening I will never forget.  Pablo explained his “dream has always been to transform his 1924 home in Little Havana into an experimental, intimate and discreet alternative space for marionette theater, dance, poetry readings and film debuts.”    With two colleagues and friends, Katherine Kramer and Joanne Barrett, his dream has now become a reality and is called “THE RED VELVET THEATER.”  Their first production will be presented April 6 & 7 and includes cooking, choreography and lyrics by Katherine Kramer and Joanne Barrett, musical landscape by saxophonist, Matthew Taylor and bassist, Bruce Johnston.  Pablo will perform with his marionettes.

The first two performances are by invitation only but if you’d like to get on the invitation list for upcoming productions, email Pablo here: pdcano@bellsouth.net

Miami Marlins New Stadium & Ballpark Opening Day

The Miami Marlins New Ballpark & Stadium

One of my ongoing “personal projects” is photographing any current events taking place in the Miami area that interests me.  Besides the Trayvon Martin case, the media has given lots of attention to the grand opening of the some-what controversial new Miami Marlins stadium located in Little Havana and built on the old Orange Bowl property.  Of course, as a portrait photographer, I like to include people in almost all my photography I do.  In my photo of the stadium, I included this Little Havana native, Roberto Rosalez.  It turns out he’s a baker waiting for his “Bus 17″ to go to work who seemed almost indifferent to the $600+ million giant behind him.

I love how the roof of the bus stop matches the shape of the stadium’s retractable roof.

Feel free to leave a comment about the new stadium here:

Trayvon Martin – his High School, a classmate and a fundraiser – Miami, FL

Trayvon Martin's High School

As a photographer, certain events move me and I feel a need to photograph them.  The death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, FL is one of those events so I spent the afternoon outside Trayvon’s school, the Dr. Michael M. Krop Sr. High School in Miami (technically it’s located in Ives Estates, FL) which is about 19 miles from my home.

I was fortunate enough to meet one of Trayvon’s 11th grade classmates, Alejandro Guerra, who agreed to talk with me and let me photograph him (he’s the one wearing the hoodie).  Alejandro explained that Trayvon and he were both in English 3 class with Ms. Kypriss during second period and that his passing had been extremely emotional on the class.  Alejandro said that Trayvon, “did his class work, never acted up, was usually pretty silent and had fun with his friends.”  Today, the school held a tree planting ceremony on the grounds as a memorial to Trayvon and most of the students are wearing “hoodies” to honor him.

In reading about Trayvon today, I learned in the Huffington Post that there is a fundraising effort led by his parents entitled Justice for Trayvon Martin with the proceeds going to “the family to cover the advocacy and other costs associated with the pursuit of justice on behalf of their son.”  As a photographer, I try to donate my time to various causes and this one interests me so I’ve agreed to donate the profits from the sale of the photograph shown above to this cause i.e. 100% of the profits from the sale of these photos here on my website will be donated to the Justice for Trayvon Martin fundraiser.

Purchase the photograph shown above:  Each photograph is 8″x10″ and is archival-quality meaning that it has been independently rated to last for 100+ years.  The total cost for each 8″x10″ with shipping is $20 and 100% of the profits will be donated (about $12/print).  Once you fill out this form, the lab will print and mail your photo within 24 hours.

I had lunch with my 5th grade teacher! Linda Harper

Yes, it’s true.  I recently drove up the coast and had lunch with my 5th grade teacher, Linda Harper.  For those of you who went to Consolidated School in Kennebunkport, Maine, you may remember her as Mrs. Skillin?  I spent most of my youth at that school from Kindergarten through 8th grade–9 years in the same building!  (Another Kennebunkport friend who lives in Miami Beach, Ashley Swanson has started a Facebook group entitled: I went to Kennebunkport Consolidated School).

Both my brothers and I had Mrs. Skillin for 5th grade and have fond memories of her class.  Have I kept in touch with her this entire time?  No, we actually bumped into each other a few years ago walking on Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk and struck up a conversation.  After moving to Miami, Linda mentioned that she spent winters at her home just north of Delray Beach and I should join her for lemonade some day.  So I did.  We had a wonderful visit poolside overlooking her magnificent ocean view and then had a delicious lunch at the Old Calypsorestaurant right on the Intracoastal waterway. Although Linda is not on Facebook, she said I could go ahead and post this.

Feel free to leave a comment, tell a memory you may have of her classroom or say hi to her here:
